Packaging Tape or Box Sealing Tape

When selecting packaging tape, several factors go beyond just the price. It's crucial to consider which tape suits your specific application and the quality of the cartons you're utilizing. Sometimes, the issue isn't the tape coming off the carton but rather the carton separating from the tape. The composition of cartons, particularly the proportion of recycled materials, can affect how well the tape adheres and performs. Remember that applying pressure is key to achieving a solid, clean seal with packaging tape. This pressure can be applied through a carton sealer equipped with rollers or by hand when using a tape gun for tape application.

Given the introduction of various new adhesive technologies, making the right tape choice for your application can be challenging. Testing newer tape options on your cartons before making a purchase is always a wise step.

There are three main adhesive types to consider: natural rubber adhesive, synthetic rubber (hot melt) adhesive, and water-based acrylic adhesive. Here's a guide to assist you in selecting the appropriate tape for your needs:

1. Natural Rubber Adhesive (Honey or amber in colour):
Natural rubber adhesive is the most commonly used tape adhesive in the market due to its excellent combination of aggressive adhesive properties and high-tack strength. It's well-suited for sealing cartons and general packaging purposes, particularly in normal temperature conditions. Available in clear, brown, and white options, this tape comes in various sizes, widths, and formats including hand rolls or machine tape rolls. Vibac PP30 polypropylene tape, a popular natural rubber adhesive tape in Australia, is recognized for its consistent and reliable performance, even if it comes at a slightly higher cost. Rubber pressure-sensitive tape adheres well to a wider range of carton types.

2. Synthetic Rubber Adhesive (Yellowish in colour):
Hot melt tape, or synthetic rubber adhesive, is sensitive to temperature extremes. It was developed as an alternative to natural rubber adhesive, undergoing substantial research to maintain a softer form and ensure comparable adhesion and tackiness. Like natural rubber, it's suitable for general carton sealing and normal temperature environments. However, it's important to note that excessive heat can cause it to release from the carton, while cold weather might lead to hardening and reduced adhesion. Available in clear and brown, both in handheld 75m size rolls for tape guns and in clear 1000m machine rolls.

3. Water-based Acrylic (Traditionally clear in colour):
Water-based acrylic adhesive is specifically engineered for cold temperatures, making it an excellent choice for use in cold rooms and freezer environments. Since its adhesive properties differ from those of rubber and hot melt, it's recommended for lighter cartons and parcels unless used in cold settings. This pressure-sensitive packaging tape is also offered in handheld 75m size rolls for tape guns and clear 1000m machine rolls.

In conclusion, the selection of packaging tape should take into account factors such as adhesive type, temperature conditions, carton composition, and intended use. By understanding the strengths and limitations of different adhesive technologies, you can make an informed decision to ensure reliable carton sealing and packaging performance.
