Staples are strong, “U” shaped metal wire fasteners designed to securely join materials such as paper, cardboard, corrugated board, and cartons. While staples are commonly associated with office staplers for fastening sheets of paper, they are also widely used in packaging and industrial applications where a stronger, more secure closure is required. In the packaging industry, staples are often used to close and seal heavy cardboard cartons, trays, and boxes, providing a reliable alternative to packaging tape or hot melt glue. Packaging staples are especially useful for heavier-duty applications because they create a firm mechanical hold that helps keep cartons closed during handling, storage, and transport.

Staples are identified by two main dimensions: the “crown” and the “leg.” The crown is the flat top section of the staple that spans across the surface of the carton, while the legs are the two pointed sides that penetrate the material and fold or clinch underneath to hold it securely in place. Choosing the correct crown width and leg length is important to ensure proper carton closure and performance, depending on the thickness and type of board being stapled and your stapler.
